Square footage in a commercial carpet cleaning quote
Understand measured carpet area, excluded surfaces and why layout affects a facility-cleaning proposal.
Quick answer
Square footage is an area measurement: length multiplied by width for a rectangle. In a commercial carpet quote it should describe the carpeted work areas, not automatically the entire building. Divide irregular layouts into smaller sections and identify exclusions. Approximate figures support planning; the provider may verify them before confirming scope.
Measure the surface being quoted
Separate carpet, tile and other surfaces. Mark the carpeted sections on a plan, then identify closets, stairs, areas beneath immovable fixtures and spaces outside the request. State whether your dimensions are approximate. Building gross area can include spaces with no carpet and cannot substitute for the carpet scope.
Use the same basis to compare quotes
Ask whether the quoted area means measured carpet, an agreed open area or a building total. Clarify furniture handling, corridors and phased access separately. Square footage alone does not describe condition, number of sections or time constraints.
For example, a rectangular section 20 feet long and 15 feet wide has an area of 300 square feet. That calculation describes only that section; it does not establish a cleaning price or include adjacent rooms.
